History

The Magyar tribes brought the ancestral Vizsla into the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century; the breed accompanied Hungarian nobility on horseback hunts for the next thousand years. Nearly extinguished by both World Wars, the modern Vizsla was rebuilt in the 1950s from a few smuggled lines.

Personality

Athletic, affectionate, and famously 'velcro' — they cannot bear to be in another room from their person. Tireless in the field, restless without work, and emotionally porous. They feel everything you feel.

To Live With One

Ranches, equestrian estates, and active families. They require serious daily exercise — running, swimming, hunting — and constant company. Given both, they are among the most devoted of all sporting breeds.

Notable Companions

Frank Sinatra kept Vizslas at his Palm Springs compound, a choice that speaks to the breed's mid-century Rat Pack glamour. Dana Perino, White House Press Secretary under George W. Bush, has been an outspoken advocate. The Vizsla has always attracted owners who value both athleticism and emotional intelligence.
