Löwchen History & Origin

The 'Little Lion Dog' appears in Renaissance tapestries, Goya paintings, and Dürer engravings. Once the favored lap dog of the European courts, the breed was nearly extinct by the 1960s — fewer than 70 remained worldwide. A handful of devoted breeders rescued it; it is still among the rarest pedigrees on the AKC register.

Palatial apartments, country houses, and collectors of historic breeds. They are robust for their size, travel well, and prefer not to be left alone. They reward an owner who appreciates rarity.

Notable Companions

Goya painted them in the salons of the Spanish court; Dürer engraved them into the Northern Renaissance. They were the discreet companions of noblewomen who valued a dog small enough for the lap but spirited enough for the hunt. Today they are kept by connoisseurs who collect living art.
